ALMA — Andrew Bare, Roxann Harrington and Danny Wernick filed to appear on the November ballot for four available City Commission seats, according to the city's official election page.
Because only three candidates filed, Alma says the commission contest did not appear on the Aug. 4 primary ballot and will instead appear at the Nov. 3 general election.
The filing deadline was April 21. The city lists four commissioners whose terms expire this year: Bare, Harrington, Wernick and Michelle Pitts. Pitts is not among those who filed, which is why one of the four seats has no candidate on the ballot.
Alma's commission has seven members elected at large. Voters do not choose the mayor directly; the commission appoints one of its members to preside over meetings and serve as the city's ceremonial head. Greg Mapes is mayor. Harrington is vice mayor and, according to her biography on the city's site, has served on the commission since January 2010.
The city says the three candidates receiving the most votes normally serve four-year terms, while the fourth-place candidate serves two years. With three names on the ballot for four seats, the fourth could be decided by write-in votes.
